Long-Track Speedskating

The ice has melted off the long track, and all formal practices and races are over for the year. However, the oval is dry and it's already in great shape for inline skating. If you are excited about long track skating for next winter, consider doing short track in the fall before the long track season begins. All the best long trackers say that short track has helped them a lot!

Keep Us On Ice

It cost about $16,000 for ice maintenance at the oval last year. Our share of the fees is $10,000. If you use the oval, please make a tax-exempt donation online to the "Anchorage Skates Fund" at the Alaska Community Foundation. All donors will receive an Anchorage Skates pin. We'll also be glad to take your contributions at any events.

Anchorage Skates is an organization of advocates for the Skating Oval at Cuddy Family Midtown Park. This group includes people across a broader spectrum of the skating community, and it is an important partner with Alaska Speedskating.

Race Results

The racing season ended with our marathon races on February 28ths. Congratulations to winners: Peter Haeussler (50k men), Sean Skaling (25k men), and Wendy Arnett (25k women). All race results for the season can be found here.

Midtown Park Oval Makes World List

The Midtown Park Oval recently was listed on a worldwide list of speedskating ovals. It's kinda fun to look at this website, and see where other ovals are, and how many are in which countries. In addition, an arrangement has been made to list our metric-style race results on the SpeedskatingResults.com website.

The Mid-Town Park Speedskating Oval

Our regulation size 400-m speedskating oval is only the 6th in the United States. It's low-tech and not refrigerated, but the ice is great, and it's got the best view of any of the ovals. The other 400-m ovals are: Salt Lake City, Utah (indoor, refrigerated, and the epicenter of US speedskating); Milwaukee, Wisconsin (indoor, refrigerated); Lake Placid, New York (outdoor, refrigerated); Roseville, Minnesota (outdoor, refrigerated); Butte, Montana (outdoor, refrigeration broken). Come try it out! Lights will be installed in the summer of 2010.
